The European Journal of Medicinal Chemistry published a paper prepared under the supervision of Prof. Sławomir Sęk and Prof. Karolina Pułka-Ziach, entitled “De novo designed self-assembling helicomimetic lipooligoureas with antibacterial activity”. The researh was done in cooperation with the group of Prof. Dariusz Bartosik from the Faculty of Biology of the University of Warsaw.
The paper describes lipooligoureas, a new class of compounds based on foldamers, which are lipopeptide mimetics. These compounds have antimicrobial activity and inhibit the growth of bacteria resistant to numerous antibiotic drugs. Interestingly, their ability to self-organize and aggregate correlates with antimicrobial activity. At the same time, they show increased resistance to proteolytic degradation in human blood serum. These properties put the developed lipooligoureas in the group of potential candidates for effective antibiotic drugs.
